If you have a toothache, you are most likely suffering with extreme pain and discomfort. This might make you want to eliminate the toothache in any way you can. Well, in order to find the comfort you want, you need to identify the cause of your toothache. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Tyler Christopherson, is happy to tell you all about the causes of toothaches. The most common causes include:
-Something stuck between your teeth: This is a simple and immediately treatable cause. Most of the time stubborn and hard food particles or objects get stuck between the teeth and cause pain, like jerky, steak, and more. You can remove the object and find the comfort you deserve by flossing around the tooth. You can also brush and rinse, but flossing will most likely do the job.
-A damaged tooth or dental restoration: A damaged tooth (like a broken or cracked tooth) can cause a toothache if the damage reaches the internal layers of the tooth. A damaged dental restoration can cause a toothache because it can apply unnatural pressure to the tooth. If you have a damaged tooth or dental restoration, it’s best to visit your dentist.
-Tooth decay: Cavities often cause toothaches because they wear down the enamel and decay the outer and inner surfaces of the teeth. If you have a cavity, it’s important to get it treated as soon as possible so it doesn’t get worse. Another cause of a toothache can be infection, so if you have an abscess on your gums, it’s best to see your dentist immediately.
